Fast Company lays off 10; cites 'challenging year' for business publications
Boston Business Journal - by Jill Lerner
Boston-based Fast Company, a magazine for the new economy, said it has laid off 10 employees to deal with an advertising slowdown in the publishing industry.
Seven editorial employees and three staffers in the events and conferences area were affected, said David Carey, president and chief executive officer of G+J Business Innovator, the New York-based owner of Fast Company.
Carey said the layoffs, the majority of which included Boston-based employees with the balance coming from the company's New York office, bring total company rolls down to approximately 98 employees.
He cited the "challenging year for all business media" in the company's decision to institute layoffs.
"The feeling at the end was we had a larger editorial staff in place than what we actually needed to produce the magazine itself," Carey said.
